The reading crisis among Filipino children has reached alarming levels. According to the 2022 update of The State of Global Learning Poverty, 9 out of 10 Filipino children at late primary age struggle with reading. Additionally, a joint report by UNICEF, UNESCO, and the World Bank found that less than 10% of Filipino children can read and comprehend a simple text. These findings underscore the urgent need for effective, accessible, and scalable interventions to combat reading poverty.
This is where the Government Academe Industry Network (GAIN) and Southville International School and Colleges step in. The GAIN Southville Reading Program is a transformative initiative designed to improve reading proficiency among 10-year-old challenged readers. It leverages the Google Read-Along app, providing an interactive, engaging learning experience. Unlike traditional programs, this approach is not teacher-dependent, enabling students to learn at their own pace—without requiring continuous internet access.
The program has delivered remarkable results. Research shows significant improvements in reading skills, as demonstrated through pre-test and post-test comparisons. Participants have progressed in their ability to read and comprehend stories. While some texts remain beyond their current level, each step forward marks an important milestone toward literacy.
Beyond skill development, the program has also boosted students’ confidence and fostered a genuine love for reading. Participants have expressed enthusiasm for learning, proving that with the right tools, every child has the potential to succeed.
Together, we can turn the tide of reading poverty. The GAIN Southville Reading Program is more than just an initiative—it’s a commitment to building a brighter, more literate future. One story at a time.
Join us in shaping lifelong learners. Together, we can make a difference.
