Southville Teams Rank in National Stock Trading Challenge

Two college teams of Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) ranked 5th and 6th places in the 2011 Equity Challenge: Clash of the Universities sponsored by Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). 60 groups from 14 colleges and universities battled in the said tournament which ran from August 9 to October 7, 2011.

Four SISC teams qualified for the final round, two of which landed in the Top 10. 5th place was Team 1 comprised of Karen Africano, May Anne Aves and Shiela Azon, coached by Dr. Marl Ferenal. 6th place was Team 3 whose members were Christina Camacho, Davy Rose Falceso and Jessica Toniza, with Dr. Rod Santos as coach.

Each competing team was given an initial virtual capital of Php 5 million pesos. The objective of the game is to test the students’ investing prowess while providing them real-world trading experience.

The contest came in easy for SISC students as investment subjects are integrated across all College curricula, and are also taught in the Basic Education Division. SISC also houses its own on-campus, online stock trading facilities which gives students valuable training in predicting market behavior, adhering to trading rules, and applying financial theories and valuation techniques.
