In partnership with the Department of Education-National Capital Region, DOST- SEI, the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines, the Mathematical Society of the Philippines, and the Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators, Sharp Calculators named Gen Mark Tanno of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme one of the Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians of the National Capital Region. He was recognized in the Awarding Ceremony held last February 28, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center Hall 2 in SM Aura, Taguig City.
The search was opened to all public and private high school students who belong to the top 3 in math in their schools, and the award was based primarily on the nominee’s performance in national and international competitions. Tanno will receive a plaque of excellence, a cash prize, and gifts from Sharp Calculators and sponsors, and will be in the first batch of Sharp Calculators’ Youth Ambassadors who will go on school tours and conduct mathematics symposiums.
On another top award, Gen Mark Tanno and Jeremie Keon Torralba of Gr. 4 – Humility was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award for their feats in international mathematics competitions. The DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) confers the YES Award to students for exemplary achievement in the fields of science and mathematics, particularly those who have won gold, silver and bronze medals in competitions abroad.
Torralba bagged a gold in the 2014 “Chong Hua Cup” Creative Mathematics Competition held in Hong Kong, a silver in the 2014 Australian Mathematics Competition, and a bronze in the 2014 Hong Kong Search for Star of the Math Olympics while Tanno scored a silver medal in the 17th Edition of the International Mathematics Contest “The Clock-Tower School” held in Romania.
